Sketches of Times Lost
Day 13: Butte
aureia and avi'li discover some "interesting" art on aymeric's wall. wol friendship (aureia and avi'li). set during heavensward patches. written for ffxivwrite2024. rated: teen 820 words ao3 link thank you to @lilas for letting me borrow avi! 💕
Tumblr media
The hall is already packed by the time she arrives.
Aureia slips through the crowd, quiet and unnoticed. With her hair down to cover her ears and her nondescript clothing that says neither High House nor Brume, she may as well be just another Hyur come to see what the fuss is about. It’s quite a good showing, far more than she expected. Lowborn families cluster together, cautious yet excited. Some parents hold back excitable youths bouncing on the balls of their feet as if they are about to sprint the length of the hall; others sooth crying children already overwhelmed by the bright lights and loud sounds. Meanwhile, the highborn do as they do best—strolling the corridor with their heads held high, chatting loftily about current interhouse gossip.
There are too many people here to see much of a divide. It’s present, of course, but both sides have no choice but to mingle.
By design, of course.
A smile tugs at the corners of her lips. She slips around a Brume family of four, quickly stepping behind the eldest son to avoid eye contact with Artoirel, and makes her way to the edge of the hall. The gallery was Aymeric’s idea, a bid to bring highborn and lowborn together disguised as bringing culture to the Brume. Yet another part of the ongoing restoration efforts and to bridge the gap between Ishgard’s two halves.
She can’t quite bring herself to tell him that most of the lowborn citizens are here for the food and not the paintings, but his heart is in the right place.
“Aureia, my dear!”
Oh, no. Artoirel spotted her after all, and now he’s walking towards her, his noticeable height making him stand out. The crowd ripples, splitting naturally to make way for the lord. She grimaces and looks away as if she hadn’t seen him, the back of her neck prickling. She has little desire to be trapped in a conversation with him today. Not after how their last one went.
Someone bumps her and an arm links through hers. “What d’you think of this one?” Avi’li says and pulls her away in a leisurely stroll, his white ears wiggling back and forth. “I like the… colours.”
“Thank gods,” Aureia breathes. “But what are you doing here, Avi?”
His eyes crinkle with mischief, tail swishing behind him.
Her brow furrows.
“Ah, yes! Right you are, the colours are fantastic,” he continues loudly, pulling her further away and in front of a line of paintings. “Very… Colour-y.”
“Yes,” she adds. “Very so. So much colour.”
“And detail, don’ forget about the detail.”
“The detail, yes!”
They pause, halting in front of a vivid painting that has not caught anyone else’s eye. If anything, most of the crowd has turned its back on it.
“Thanks for the rescue,” Aureia murmurs under her breath.
“Saw you strugglin’, thought I’d step in.” He grins. “What sort of friend would I be to leave you all alone to tangle with good ol’ Artoirel?”
“He’s not that bad.”
“No. He’s not.”
“But—”
He nods sagely. “But.”
They fall silent.
“The artist must really find this subject interestin’,” Avi’li continues. “On account of all the detail.” He blinks and cocks his head to the side. “Bit of honesty, Aur: I don’t know what in the twelve hells I’m lookin’ at.”
“I…” She frowns and also cocks her head to the side, all thoughts of her narrow escape vanishing. “I don’t know either.”
“Maybe it’s better from the other side?”
They turn as one, tilting their heads.
“Nuh uh,” Avi’li says. “That only makes it more confusin.’”
“I think it’s supposed to be the Sea of Clouds?”
“You think?”
“A landscape, yes.”
“You’re kiddin’ me.”
“No, I really think it is!”
“Yeah, by someone who has maybe seen the Sea of Clouds once. In a dream.” He steps up to the painting, his arm still linked through hers, and leans in close. “I don’t see it.”
“I see some trees there.” She points, tracing a finger through the air. “And some rocks. And—uh—what do you call that thing—”
“What thing?”
“It’s a type of rock. A hill. A… butte?”
His lips twitch, his tail swishing back and forth. “Well, I see do see a butte,” he says. “A very butt-iful butte.”
“I—what?” She presses her lips together. “Hm.”
“Yeah.” Avi’li flashes her a grin, trying not to laugh. “‘Hm’ sounds about right.”
“Oh, no. That’s quite…” She tilts her head to the side. “If you look at it that way, that’s quite—”
“Expressive? Lovingly detailed? See, if you look here—”
“Oh, gods.”
He throws back his head laughs, cackling with mirth. “Once you see it, you can’t unsee. Now, who’s gonna tell Aymeric he put erotica on his wall?”
Aureia catches his eye. “You know,” she says lightly, “I don’t think he needs to know.”

Did your OC's parents or other caregivers use any specific terms of endearment for them as a child? Do (or would) they use similar terms for their own children?
Ty for the ask, bitty! 💕 OC Vernacular Asks
8. Did your OC's parents or other caregivers use any specific terms of endearment for them as a child? Do (or would) they use similar terms for their own children?
Avi’li is the third son in his family, and unlike the Keepers of Gridania, Avi’li’s clan doesn’t send their sons away.
So to differentiate between them, the sons all have diminutive names.
Avi’li’s oldest brother, Avi’a, is called Aya.
Avi’li’s second oldest brother, Avi’to, is called Toa.
And Avi’li is called Lia.
Diminutive names are associated with love and closeness for him. Avi’li gives a nickname to everyone because it is just what is done. Thancred is Thanny or Than, Tataru is Taru, Alphinaud is Alphi, Alisaie is Ali, Estinien is Est, Aymeric is Aym, Yugiri is Yugi, Erenville is Eren, so on so forth.
When he has kids (he wants a big family :>) then yeah he’ll nickname all of them too. Nicknames are his love language.

eros 1 and storge 4 for avi, and pretend this ask has several avi blinking emojis 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eros 1. Is your OC romantic in the traditional sense? Do they enjoy giving or receiving gifts of flowers or confectionary? Or are there other courtship traditions from their culture of origin that are important to them?
Avi’li doesn’t care much for traditional courtship re: gifts and chocolate and flowers. He doesn’t mind it if his partner is into that, but he’s not going to think to do them lol.
Culturally, he and his family spent a lot of time together when he was growing up. He always had community around him. So, I think quality time is something he values more, especially as his notoriety grows, and privacy and chances to be alone with someone he loves becomes more important to him.
Storge 4. Does your OC have any siblings? Did their parents have a favourite growing up? Has their relationship with their sibling changed in adulthood? If they don't have any siblings then do they perhaps feel they have missed out on an important relationship? Do they have any especially close friends who go some way towards filling that role?
GIVING ME A CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT AVI’S SIBLINGS! 🥹
Avi’li is the youngest of five siblings; Avi’a, Ime, Fina, and Avi’to. The Avis all have their own nicknames; Avi’a is Aya, Avi’to is Toa, and Avi’li is Lia.
I think Avi’li/Lia is definitely the favorite if only for being the youngest and babied most of his life (but his parents would never admit this to keep things fair.)
Aya, Ime, and Fina all have their own families by this point, with Fina’s kids being a little older than toddlers and Aya’s children being teenagers (when Avi’li visited home for the first since moving to Erozea he was shocked at how big his niblings were! 😭).
Toa actually left to be an adventurer years before Avi’li. He left their island when he was barely an adult, and ended up dying in the Calamity. The family didn’t know what had happened for a long time until news got to them by way of a trader.
Avi’li loves his family a lot. T^T

🧩 for Avi?
🧩: How would they do in an escape room?
Avi’li’s tail flicks back and forth, ears wiggling while he inspects the most suspicious of etchings. Carved so softly into the wooden box that it’s near invisible to the naked eye. Light catches his eyes like a wicked gleam as he scans every inch of the surface until—
He sees it; that little circle where the etchings darken, faint shadows revealing hidden depth.
He presses the button. Something unlocks beneath the table, and a loud sigh of relief comes from behind him.
“We’re done right?” Estinien asks, already moving from his place on the wall, “We can go now?”
Avi’li ignores him and concentrates on fishing under the table for whatever just locked. His fingers touch three slots, like coins, and the edges of a box. No doubt it holds a key.
“No.” Avi’li stands up right. Estinien narrows his eyes at the smug look he wears. “We’re only just beginning.”
“Fuck!”
—-
Avi’li LOVES puzzles, but only if they’re with Estinien or Zero or other people without Sharlayan’s teachings. The other Scions take all the fun out of solving puzzles for him. 😭
Ask me a silly oc question!

🍴, 🧂, 🐊 for avi'li and inis!!!! - @ladamebrunette
Thank you Nero!!
Avi’li
🍴 Weirdest thing he’s eaten
Definitely archon loaf. He would rather drink seawater than ever have to eat archon loaf again. There is a time where he is recovering in [redacted] for [redacted] reasons, and the Scions practically force archon loaf on him for the ✨nutrition✨
🧂 What makes them unreasonably angry?
Estinein taking the last of the dry squid. Then it’s 🩸war🗡️⚔️
🐊 What animal are they convinced they could take in a fight?
Avi’li stares into the middle distance, “All of them.”
No further comment is made.
Inis
🍴 What’s the weirdest thing they’ve eaten?
Inis grimaces remembering Aeran’s Special Survival Stew. The name is ironic considering it nearly killed them.
🧂What makes them unreasonably mad?
Bad literature, ugly and useless architecture (“What’s the point? What’s the point!?”), things that are made to be pretty and nothing else
🐊 What animal are they convinced they could take in a fight?
A fannarl of course, tested and proven at the age of 10! Watch out Velantis, got a fannarl slayer on your hands

agape 2, philia 3, pragma 4 for avi?
Agape 2. Does your OC feel a spiritual connection to the world around them? Do they have a particular love for nature or living things?
Avi’li has always had a love and appreciation for living things; he respects things as they are and tries to understand and adapt to the culture and community around him. When he first moved to Limsa Lominsa, he worked hard to adapt to the culture, and enjoys everything the city has to offer him. With the beast tribes, he enjoys building connections with them and learning more about their problems and their traditions and way of life.
Especially after Shadowbringers, he’s more aware of his place in the universe than ever, and his connection to the world has only strengthened.
Philia 3. What qualities does your OC most value in a friend? Loyalty? Shared sense of humour? Or something else?
Conviction, passion, steadfast ideals, innate kindness and weird senses of humor are all elements his closest friends share. He admires people like that and gravitates to them regardless of finer personality details. Especially if they can help and stand fast beside each other to see their goals and dreams fulfilled? All the better.
Pragma 4. After the initial fires of passion cool to some degree, what would keep your OC engaged in a relationship? Shared goals? Similar values? Or contented companionship?
Avi is demiromantic so actually a shared foundation is necessary to any romantic relationship. It doesn’t even have to be deep friendship, just Something to relate over that’s core to what Avi’li is experiencing in the moment.
Without that, if someone he’s sleeping with/casually dating had romantic feelings for him, he will feel guilty about not feeling the same way and break it off.

Pls gib soup for Avi? ♥
🍲 soup for you 💕
Pragma 5. What importance does your OC attach to marriage? Do they believe it’s important to make a public statement of commitment? Are they concerned about inheritance rights and security for their family? Do they see marriage as an unnecessary signifier of commitment and loyalty?
Marriage isn’t necessary per se, and family/inheritance are so far from Avi’li’s mind. I think instead, marriage is a thing he grew up with, watched members of his clan and family do, and it would be more of a familial/traditional activity to share than anything else.
